The day was a fantastic success, with students given the opportunity to step out of the classroom and experience construction in a hands-on, engaging way. GF Tomlinson Construction led a door-hanging session, while Alpha Construction ran hands-on tetrahedron builds. Drury Joinery shared career insights, Lindum Group demonstrated surveying techniques, and Balfour Beatty delivered interactive tower and bridge activities. Tilbury Douglas set a design challenge; B&K guided a collaborative model school build, and Clegg Construction supported bird box construction. Students also took part in electrical, bricklaying, plastering, painting, basic plumbing, and cable-location activities led by Via. Throughout the day, students developed communication, teamwork, and practical skills—and most importantly, thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Students are gaining hands-on experience in site surveying and setting out using professional equipment. Under the guidance of an instructor, they are learning how to use surveying instruments accurately, take precise measurements and understand ground levels and positioning on a live site environment.
This practical training develops technical competence, attention to detail and an understanding of how accurate surveying underpins safe and successful construction projects.

A student gaining real on-site experience while working at height using specialist access equipment, supported and supervised by industry professionals. This practical training allows her to apply classroom knowledge in a live environment, developing confidence, technical understanding and a strong awareness of health and safety procedures essential within the construction sector.

Students are learning the essential foundations of bricklaying, carefully preparing the area before laying bricks. They are developing skills in measuring, setting out, mixing mortar and ensuring surfaces are level and aligned.
This preparation stage is vital, as accuracy and attention to detail directly affect the strength, stability and finish of the structure. Through hands-on practice, students are building the core skills and confidence required within the bricklaying trade.

Tomlinson gave pupils the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in carpentry by learning how to hang a timber door to a frame. Under guidance, they developed practical skills in measuring, marking, fitting hinges and ensuring correct alignment.
This task requires precision, patience and attention to detail, helping students understand the importance of accuracy and finish within the carpentry and joinery trade.

Students are learning how to accurately measure, mark and cut pipes to the correct length, developing precision, technical understanding and confidence in using industry tools. They are gaining hands-on experience in reading measurements, applying correct cutting techniques and maintaining safe working practices.
This practical training reinforces the importance of accuracy in installation, as even small errors can affect system performance, safety and overall quality. Through guided instruction and repetition, students are building the competence and attention to detail required within the construction and building services sector.

Construction teachers shared their skills and knowledge of the building sector, teaching students vital practical skills. In this image, a mentor is showing a group how to correctly prepare a plaster mix before applying it with a trowel.
This hands-on experience is essential, as proper preparation affects the strength, quality and finish of the work, while helping students build confidence and competence in real construction techniques.

The students worked on a practical classroom project related to construction and design. Gathered around a table using only cardboard and tape they have designed and constructed a prototype as part of a hands-on learning activity
Through this task, students are learning key skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, planning, and an understanding of basic structural principles, helping them develop practical knowledge for the construction industry.
Demonstrating the importance of investing in the future builders of the sector.
